Explaining things away
I got up and looked through every room carefully. I found nothing loose. I went back to reading, and the sound stopped after about ten minutes. I told myself it was the building settling.

Old wood in changing temperatures does that. I wrote it in the journal too, gave it a practical explanation, and went to sleep.
