John rushed to the lantern room and worked the great light, flashing the warning pattern every sailor along this coast was supposed to know. Stop. Danger. Turn back. But the little blue boat kept coming, its passengers waving cheerfully up at the lighthouse, mistaking his desperate signal for a friendly hello.
