Bill’s heart raced. He reached for the papers but didn’t pick up the pen. “Why?” he asked again, his voice quieter now, like someone trying not to wake a sleeping giant.

Harrow leaned back in his chair, arms crossed. “I said sign them.” The silence stretched, heavy and cold. Bill’s hands trembled slightly.
