Pounding on the door

The door rattled as Carter pounded on it, calling Paul’s name. Paul squeezed his eyes shut, willing himself to disappear.

He had never felt a rush of panic like this before. As if he was stuck in an awful misunderstanding. Every ring of the bell, every slam of Carter’s fist against the door, tightened the knot in his chest.
