Out on the street
The doors slammed shut behind him. The sound rang out like a final goodbye. Bill stood on the sidewalk, sun in his face, his belongings in his arms. He looked back once. No one was watching. No one came after him. He turned toward the street—and walked, not knowing where else to go.
